Getting the indexable turning tool

I finally got my hands on the indexable turning tool that had been a long-standing issue.
Up until now, I’d basically been using handmade brazed carbide tools, but every time they chipped, I’d have to resharpen them. That would change the cutting performance, take a lot of time, and make it hard to maintain consistent dimensions.

On the other hand, there are so many manufacturers of lathe inserts, and they come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, materials, and coatings. On top of that, the insert holder you need obviously depends on the shape and size of the insert. It’s hard to decide on any of that when I haven’t even used them yet.If I could at least narrow it down by manufacturer, that would really help.

The other day, I was talking to a friend who works in production engineering at Fuji Heavy Industries, and he told me Kyocera has a good reputation, so I’ve settled on them. Now I just need to consult with GEMINI to finalize the specifications.
AI can be quite a hassle—it’ll casually recommend model numbers that don’t even exist—but it’s helpful when it offers suggestions with explanations, like “This carbide model is best for your machine” or “This coating is suitable.” Here's an example of a conversation with Gemini. (It's a bit long, though.)

Is the CA115P suitable for rough machining?
To put it simply, the “CA115P” is an excellent choice for rough machining (skinning) of S45C steel, as both its performance and actual availability (manufacturing) have been confirmed by the manufacturer. However, when using a bench lathe, its sister grade, the “CA125P,” is safer (more reliable) and therefore recommended. I will explain the catalog specifications, actual model numbers, and precautions specific to bench lathes.

  1. Features and Verification of CA115P This is the latest “CVD-coated carbide for steel machining” grade released by Kyocera in recent years. Performance: It is highly specialized for wear resistance and possesses the strength to withstand high-speed, heavy-duty cutting without the cutting edge losing its edge due to heat. New breakers (such as PMG) for medium to rough machining are also available, making it perfectly suited for roughing operations.
  2. Why is “CA125P” better suited for bench lathes? Kyocera clearly distinguishes between two grades in this series. CA115P: For continuous to light intermittent machining (emphasis on wear resistance and tool life) CA125P: For continuous to heavy intermittent machining (emphasis on chip resistance and toughness) Rough machining on bench lathes (especially deburring) creates an environment equivalent to “heavy intermittent machining (severe impact)” for the cutting edge, as the machine’s power is low and chattering is likely to occur. While the CA115P is extremely hard and wear-resistant, it tends to chip more easily than the CA125P when subjected to rattling vibrations or impacts. Therefore, if you have a choice when purchasing, selecting the tougher and more resilient CA125P will help your inserts last longer during rough turning on a bench lathe.

I don't think I could come up with search results like this without AI.

After discussing the options while considering factors such as availability and price, we settled on an 80-degree rhombus-shaped size 06 positive insert to suit our low-power, low-rigidity bench lathe. We selected the CCMT060204-PP-CA125P insert for roughing and the CCET060202MFR-U-PR1225 insert for finishing. We also acquired a Kyocera 10x10mm peripheral tool holder and a 12mm boring bar.

First, I tested it on a 20KO bearing housing. The material is raw S45C (AISI 1045 equivalent) round bar.
Roughing insert: CCMT060204-PP-CA125P
It’s incredibly tough. I don’t think my lathe could even cause chipping on this. If I treat it strictly as a roughing tool, the cutting performance isn’t bad. At first, there was some chatter, but it seems it doesn’t perform well unless I run it at a slightly higher speed. When I switched to the high-speed gear on the lathe—which I’ve never used for steel before—it produced blue chips and cut through the material with ease.

Finishing insert CCET060202MFR-U-PR1225
This thing cuts like a dream. It feels great. Even when you need to cut just another 0.005 mm, the blade cuts through reliably. This makes it easy to achieve precise fit dimensions. As long as you handle it with a little care, I don’t think there will be any issues with durability.

Since there are some shapes that can’t be machined with this alone, I still use my handmade cutters.
